The morning was slightly cool. The camp was not completely full since the previous weekend's rain had postponed the Gulfcoast Enduro. The dust wasn't going to be too bad and there were some wet areas on the trail.
My regular riding buddy on row zero had puked out on me and was riding with some friends on row 15. There was only a single wild man on row one. No one was on row two. I had two C riders with no timekeeping equipment. Great, no one to help with a timekeeping event and no one behind me to push.
I instructed the C riders to never pass me unless the wild man on the white Yamaha passed me. It seemed like all the arrows that had been hung the previous weekend had succumbed to the rain and wind. Lucky for me they had used pink ribbon that I found every 1/4 mile or so.
The camp had a small tractor with a bush-hog. I was soon to find that they used this to cut some new trail.
Soon after the start my goggles became wet from overgrowth. I thought the overgrowth section would be over in a few miles. Then the trail became difficult to see because the brush and trees were covering the trail. In a few places the brush was so thick that I had to duck down over the top of my handlebars to keep from being ripped off my machine!
The club had a ton of new trail, but the rain had pulled down the brush to create a tunnel effect for long portions of the test sections. After a while I felt that I could go faster if I just closed my eyes and waited until my handlebars bounced off another hidden tree!
The race was a ton of fun and the early rows were not the place for this ride. The club had done an excellent job of cutting new trail, but the rain made a completely different Enduro than the club planned. Thanks for another great SERA ride!
